Bigshot Slingshot
« on: August 17, 2009, 06:12:23 PM »

Some details:

The temporary trigger is a pair of pliers ground to fit a marble in the pouch.

I had to a length just to full draw a pair of silver Thera Band rubbers.

I made the pulleys out of static caster wheels held and spinning against a bench grinder wheel.

A triangle that flips down to hold the right angle is definitely needed.

Perhaps another automatic hold-back.

I may have to go to a multi-pulley system to draw this giant.

I added a few photos to show some details.

The pulley draw really helps and I can tie it off to prevent swing up.

That's pretty awesome! If you made that shoulder fired, you'd have a bullet bow, just a lot more compact. Have you considered running the bands in a metal guard shaped kinda like this:
-----------                    -----------
|  OO                                OO  |
|  OO                                OO  |
-----------                    -----------
(The O's represent the bands)

That way if they snap, your eyes are protected. I think you can even get either steel or aluminum in that shape at Lowe's. You'd have to make sure everything was smooth to prevent band wear.

It is impossible for a snapped rubber to hit me.

They go vertical and I see only string.

Video coming later.

Great video, that leverage will come in handy with more bands. I was actually thinking more on the lines of a shoulder fired bulletbow type weapon or your other project needing the guards for the bands. While performing the mundane task of stocking at work, I've been thinking of making my own version of the megadart gun. I'm planning on running the bands inside the gun's frame to make it more compact and to reduce the risk of injury from a snapped band. It would be similar to how my ballvalve airgun is setup. I may even incorporate a interchangeable barrel system to switch between darts and .25 cal ammo.
