How do you pump up your guns?
« on: January 29, 2012, 05:44:15 AM »
Do you use a shock pump?
air compressor?
How do you do it, and is it sucessful?

I am currently using a air compressor, i believe i am getting around 125 psi...

I live on acreage so if i want to go hunting, each shot, well its a long way back just to fill up.
Whats my best alternative to get about 125 psi easily? Would a shock pump achieve this? How long would it take?

I'm still using a foot pump that goes 100-110psi. Cheap and reliable. But I'm still searching for the perfect air system.

I am using a compressor, Not at all portable, which is my problem if i want to go hunting.

I have tried to use some bike pumps that i had which = no dice... (Takes multiple minutes, and is EXTREAMLY hard to push.
But i have heard about people using shock pumps? Should i look into this? How long/how many estimated pumps would it take?

Shock pumps are a good way to get high psi yet being still relatively portable, though I don't have access to shock pumps. Bike pumps do give you a work out, one way I'd make refilling a lot easier with a cheap and portable bike pump is to use a smaller air-chamber & hunt smaller game. I'd be able to take it up to 100psi in 10 strokes. Lol :P

I use a dedicated airgun pump.. It cost me about $180 from pyramid air but it's one of the best things I have ever bought.. Not sure if you can get one easily in AU but if you could that would solve a lot of problems.. With my pump it takes only about 30-40 pumps to get the pressure your looking for in that size of a resservoir.. I have also used car tire inflaters that run off of a 12volt power source for filling to low pressures quickly.. They go to 150psi in about 30 seconds

Ok... I need to think of something cheap and portable... what about shock pumps?

From what I have heard shock pumps work great.. I have never had one personally so I don't know how easily the fitting work and all that, but if people are doing it it should work for you

Shock pumps work great for getting pressures up to 400 psi. They are portable and the one I have had for 3 years has never failed me. The main problem is their short stroke, which translates to a lot of pumping. If you stick with small diameter ammo and small air chambers, you'll get good performance with less than 50 pumps to achieve max pressure. One thing on my list of stuff I'd like to accomplish is to run a shock pump off a motor. It would need a fan to keep it cool, but it would make a cheap way to make a high pressure compressor.

hmm, i might have to get a shock pump then...
How hard does the compression get at about 100 PSI?
Its not like impossible to push like other pumps/takes to long?

Edit:
Can't wait for the info, Thinking of buying one.
I have found a really cheap one rated at 300psi on ebay....
Thoughs?

I think that since a shockpump is designed to pump to that high of pressure, unlike say a bike pumps, the shockpump will have a one way valve and other things that make pumping at high pressure easy.. On my airgun pump it doesn't get hard to pump it until around 2,500 psi.. Do you know what kind of fittings a shock pump uses??

A shock pump usually connect to a standard schrader type tire valve. If I'm using higher pressures, I'll use a all metal valve, usually found near the well section of hardware stores.

Ok, so to get to 125 PSI, how many pumps (estimate)?

Also, what will the compression be like to get to 125? Will it be hard to push with a shock pump (Just a standard 1)? The reason i ask this is if i want to pump up the gun while i am proning i don't want to have to work seriously hard to pump it, or have to stand up ect as i might not want to give away my position...

A shock pump at 125 psi is a walk in the park, you can do it by hand from a prone position if necessary. The number of pumps to get there, based on the pics of your guns will be around 125 to 200 pumps.  :o Thats where they get you, easy to pump, but requires lots of strokes.

I think it would be a better option for me.
My air compressor goes up to 120 MAX, And it will not refill till its down at about 20PSI.
So i am shooting at about 50 average. I would like to be shooting at alot higher!
