[Question] Good PSI for hunting with nail darts?
« on: January 28, 2012, 09:32:11 PM »
I am thinking about using my air powered sniper rifle for hunting, Its accurate so with a good aim, i think i could take something down!

If i was using just a standard nail dart from about 10 meters away, how many PSI should i use to ensure a kill on a bird or small animal?
I live on a property so i have TONS of room to go hunting... Also, i would like to try hunting a fox oneday, Would killing a fox be possible? If so how many PSI?

Note: I only hunt pest animals, or if i hunt anything else, it would be on the sole intention of eating it. (not that i have ever done that, I doubt a rat would be very tastey LOL, actually, i wonder if i could take down a kangaroo, i am a aussie btw, kangaroo is YUMMMM)

I've had good luck with 125 psi. That would be awesome if you took down a kangaroo, I've heard that they are quite the tasty pest animal.  ;D With a good valve and a 3.5" nail dart, killing a roo or fox should be doable.

Ok, thanks for the help... Would be cool if i could bang a kanga! 125 psi, my sniper can easily hold that... Looks like i could do it... once i make some good bullets, do a few tests, get a scope, i might actually do some hunting!

How big is your air chamber. The last time I shot feral cats was with 3/4''x approx 3ft air-chamber (Z shaped). Also a hand-operated ball-valve air-gun. The large air-chamber and 4'' naildarts made up for the low 100psi-110psi.
The ball-valve I use looked like this, oiled well it was easier to open compared to the PVC one.

I need to get a new pressure gauge so i can see what PSI i am getting!!! My current gauge dosnt go high enough!

I use 2 diffrent size pressure pipe for my sniper (I am a amature air gun hobbiest) 15mm and 20mm. As for the length, hmm, thats a tough 1, i cant check right now as i cbf to go outside to the shed to take a look as its late at night, but i would say bout a metre and a half.

I think it fill it up to bout 125 psi usally, but i have no idea because i cant check! Also, i cant find any good gauge's!
I want to somehow attach one to my gun so that i can check the pressure all the time, Has anyone done this? I would probs need to attach a shrader valve and attach a gauge onto that. Any ideas?

I will have to upload some pics of my guns soon!!!
I will try to do so tomoz, i have alot to do in the morning so will be early arvo before i can post!

Great a pic of your gun would be wonderful. I'm not quite sure how exactly to fit a pressure gauge, but I'd think you could probably fit it to a pipe by buying a pressure gauge fitting. Not sure maybe someone will chime in.

The hardest part about adding a pressure gauge to a PVC gun is the fact that PVC doesn't take threads well.. When I built mine I just bought an end plug drilled it out and tapped it for the size thread of the pressure gauge.. I should do a tutorial when I get a chance.. But I'm not sure there is any good way to attach a gauge to a PVC gun.. If you drilled and tapped the PVC it would make it very week and it would probably leak

PVC is weak and does not really take much pressure but maybe super strong epoxy would work in assisting the fitting.
