Delmar's trail and error thread
« on: November 06, 2011, 11:52:21 AM »
I decided not to take mauz's thread off coarse any more and start a separate thread.

You will have to find a happy middle ground of air pressure and bullet weight.. it's hard to say exactly what you will need without knowing what you are building exactly
That sounds right. I'm sure there will be some trial and error involved.  I am thinking of starting with either 00 buckshot or 0 as a projectile. If I can find a barrel size that matches up nicely.
00 would be 8.38 mm in diameter and a lead ball would weigh 53.8 gr
0 would be 8.13 mm and weigh 49 gr

You should get pretty good performance with those weights. Are you still looking at using a rifled barrel?

Not on my first build. I don't know if I will ever get more advanced but it certainly is something I would like I have an interest in. If I ever do build a large bore rifle with a rifled barrel it will use a Mosin Nagant barrel and stock. or an old sing;e shot rifle that I could use with the air gun or use with the single shot reciver.

Here's some aluminum tube that works great as a barrel: http://www.lowes.com/pd_215889-37672-11395_0__?productId=3053611&Ntt=aluminum+tube&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Daluminum%2Btube&facetInfo=. Works well with 3/8" ball bearings, lead balls, and darts. It will fit in 3/8" copper fittings, making it easy to interface with the rest of the airgun. I've had pretty good luck with steel brake line for smaller calibers as well.
