weekend air
« on: June 07, 2009, 12:03:19 PM »
well still on the search for adequate pressure air i was able to test a couple of scources first a schwinn bike pump it has no puessure rating on the pakage but says "high pressure capibilitys" the good news as hard as i tried i was unable too blow this pump should be a great pump for bikes and balls
the bad  the approx 1" piston makes it real work to git past 100psi the lack of hose and small size make it hard to get in a good pumpimg position i was able to hit 160 psi but it was hard and probably looked like i was wrestling a metal snake on the floor this pump now resides on my oldest sons bike
the next was a yellow harbor freight compressor this stated 300psi the cord was kinda light but it was 10 bux and they said i could bring it back within the next 90 days the good it still runs and will still hit 200 psi the bad the first shot i was able to get to 280 psi at that point the motor was having a hard tine running seemed underpowerd (this was also the first shot @that pressure with the triggered ball valve it chroneyd 218fps mot a big improvment also not enough shots to be conclusive) after that first shot i took lots of time between shots to make sure the compressor cooled off) each charge after the first got lower and lower till i could only get about 200psi barly i also looked at building a pump again i turned a piston welded up a shaft ang got tube ready looked around town for some small check valves with no luck but i did find that if i can find something to make a bushing from i can use the head from one of these small compressors maybe this afternoon ill find somethin to machine and cet it a bit closer I also had a idea you know those gas shocks that hold up the back door on your mini van i have one here that is close enough to those little heads it could be made to fit its a little bigger diameter than i would like and a bit shorter stroke but should be a fairly easy mod if i can safly depressureize it the one i have layin around has approx .75 bore and will hold my weight 220lbs that calculates to about 500 psi but as i said it will hold my weight so its prolly more

That's a great idea using one of those gas shocks to build your own pump! One should be able to reach a decent pressure and still get better flow than possible with a shock pump...

Ok i think i figured out how to safely depressurize this gas shock Im gonna set it up in the robotic drill press and drill a small hole in it remotely that way if i get anything other than a large hiss i wont be there to get hurt might moniter the process with a small camera
now the robotic drill press sounds tool when i phrase it like that but it realy just a small drill press an extension cord a switched plug and a bungee cord or weight and string it would be more fun to put a small actuator on it but not necsasery
i think it will work and be safe and i need to cut off the end anyway then i just need to machine add a flange and attach the head hose and gauge and ill be set maybe

Have you gotten that shock depressurized?

I scratched another 12v compressor off the list its the bigger yellow one at harbor freight says 260 psi in 1 place 300psi in another it also says "strong enough to run continous for an hour" well it falls on its face at about 140 psi not enough motor burnt it up trying to air a tire
