An interesting thought
« on: March 05, 2009, 07:26:03 PM »
So here it is my gun because of the twist rate of my barrel does not like sabots so instead I made an extra long bullet out of rockmaple on my lathe so it's more like a dart in the shape of a bullet. Well I tested it and it worked!!! The bullet seems to come out perfectly straight and hits pretty hard. I was thinking I needed more of something with a point if I'm gonna hunt deer with that way it gets in there a little easier and It's legal. I also made one out of deer antler that's a little harder than the rockmaple. So tonight I will do some more testing and see what happens...

Sounds like a good idea. It is interesting how twist rate affects the accuracy of various bullets. I'm thinking the same thing you are when it comes to hunting deer with homemade airguns. Penetration and a good blood channel are key to our success. I watched a video of a guy who took down a deer with a Korean PCP airgun using a roundball. It came down, but he mentioned the fact that airguns lack the hydrostatic shock factor that firearms have making shot placement even more important than it already is. Not to mention, I've read several accounts of people tracking wounded deer for hours only to lose them. These are "canned" hunts, very different from actually being up against wild deer. Man, I'd like to see a picture of what you've made. You are fortunate to have a lathe. I'm jealous   :'( lol

Don't bee too jealous yet!!! I tried the bullets I just turned last night and well they didn't seem to work. I think maybe the first one was a freak accident that it hit the target straight on these ones hit side ways every time they hit hard but not what I intended. I will make some more and try to e-mail you a pic. If you want I could probably send you some so you can try them in you're guns.

I decide that the bullets weren't long enough to stabilize themselves so I am going to make them longer and try that will keep you updated when I get info...

Ahhh there not so great. They hit hard but there too soft even the rockmaple! I think steel or some kind of metal would be much better...

Steel sounds nice  ;D I remember reading about some russian handgun bullets that had a hardened steel tip and a lead body. On impact the lead would flatten against the steel, thus transferring its energy to the penetrating tip. It could punch into a GI helmet.
