10 Round Burst Airgun
« on: February 24, 2009, 01:19:30 PM »
While I cant hunt game animals with a full auto, it would be cool to tear up some cans with a more powerful modified version of a cloud. I've been impressed what my simple BBMG can do with 1/4" slingshot ammo at only 100 psi. Perhaps I can up the pressure and up the caliber and get even better results.
My plan is to use a 400 psi shock pump (currently on its way!) to fill homemade reusable air cylinders that will fuel each burst. They will attach to the valve via a QD fitting. I'm going to use a very small ammo chamber, basically small enough to house 10 3/8" slingshot ammo or 0000 buckshot. I'll probably use a ball valve at first to test the idea and then switch to a qev piloted by a ball valve for the finished product. My idea is to be able to get 3 bursts per minute. We'll see what happens.
In the mean time, I need to buy some copper to build my airgun I plan to hunt deer with this fall...

I would use steel, but since I am using compressed air, I'd prefer to use stainless steel to prevent rusting. The steel alone for the air chamber would cost $20, enough for me to make 10 chambers out of copper. I'm only planning on going up to 400 psi and the max fill pressure of the pipe I plan to use is 740 psi which gives a decent safety margin, not to mention the safety margin built into that number. The fittings I use are rated at a max of 500 psi, which gives a little less margin for error.  ??? Of course the selling point of using steel is that it would give me the excuse of using a rifled barrel liner from track of the wolf or buying a muzzleloading barrel... :-\

Exactly! and you could try hooking it up to co2 and taking it for a spin!

How exactly do those liners work?

The barrel liners are used to restore old barrels. A gunsmith drills out the barrel to the OD of the liner and welds the liner in. The liner is basically is thin walled rifle barrel. While it couldnt withstand the pressures of gunpowder, it can definitely contain the pressure of most if not all airguns. They are around $4 per inch, though

Huh it sounds like a really awesome idea! I will have to look into it a little more now that I know how it works thanks!

I'm finally getting this project started! I've got the metal cut, I just need to solder it all up. I get off around noon tomorrow and am off the next day, so I should be able to get it assmbled and some testing done! I'm hoping for 300 fps, but in reality, it probably wont shoot over 200 fps due to the blowby caused by a slightly oversized barrel.  ???

Almost a year later, and I've finally got a working version of my 10 round burst airgun. It is pretty potent, puts ammo right through paneling, I havent chronied it or tried to penetrate any harder targets yet. Now that I've got a high pressure compressor, this project is a lot more fun. It shoots a 10 round burst of 3/8" steel ammo. It needs a magnet to keep the ammo from rolling out the barrel, but works very well. Videos to follow, here is a picture:
