Another ammo source
« on: February 05, 2010, 09:15:26 AM »
For those of you that like to shoot ball ammo, I found out that Fastenal carries grade 1000 steel balls. http://www.fastenal.com/web/products/detail.ex?sku=0987158&ucst=t These make good slingshot ammo as well without the flats found on commonly available steel slingshot ammo. It looks like a good source for some of my BB machinegun projects.  ;D

I am a cheapskate.

Nails , corks,  and a little hot glue make very good darts and cost less than 3 cents a round.

Many nails and many corks can be reused after shooting them into a suitable target.

I  don't know another way of making a 100 grain projectile as cheaply or as locally available.

OTOH Nail Darts are single shot ammunition.

Any of the bearings over 3/8" are expensive to shoot. They do work great in machineguns and small caliber hunting airguns when used with a patch. The 3/8" size packs a good punch, though it doesnt have the penetration of a nail dart. I've taken a couple of rabbits with them. One shot one kill. Too bad the 3/4" ones cost so much, I'd love to shoot one of those for fun.  ;D

glass marbles are fun to shoot too. They have a terrible ballistic coefficient, but are fairly accurate within 30 yard ranges. Beyond that, they tend to veer off course. You should see what happens when one is traveling 600 fps and hits a metal pole.  ;D

Havent tried that one, but I did hot glue a 20 gauge wad to a .58 cal lead roundball. Adds a nice bit of drag and keeps it flying straight. It is easier to watch its flight too.

An idea:

Carve spiral grooves into the cork to make it spin.

Hot glue the marble into a concave depression to form a mini ball shaped projectile.

I was given whole box full of used corks yesterday.

The lay lives about 1/2 mile away and she will save some more.

I love using nails and corks.

my next project is a grinding jig to shape the nose of the cork.

Something like this: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=557135 but homemade? I still need to find someone that has a bunch of corks. I'll check with one of my buddies at work, he drinks a good bit of wine.  ;D

Exactly, right down to the grooves.

That is 1 oz.

AFAIK A marble is about 64 grains.

The marble/cork may be the way to a semi-auto feed.

I LOVE BEARING BALL AMMO! my only issue is price, i have a super limited budget. these are cheaper than any iv'e seen before, and 250 balls will last a long time, saying as iv'e used 2 in a year of making air guns. of course if i had some that number might be bigger....................
