Spear hunting
« on: January 26, 2010, 10:10:54 PM »
What do you think of spear hunting. I mean a 6foot (2 pounds) sharpened pole, with an 8-10inch kitchen knife blade inserted as a point. Chucking this thing at game will give you 50+ ftlbs or 100ftlbs if you're good at close range. Its cheap ($5-$10), simple in design and lethal on varmints.
If im not mistaken there is a spear hunting museum in Alabama set up by Gene Morris. He claims to have taken at least 400 game animals with nothing more than a spear. 8)

Spear hunting would be awesome. Unfortunately it is illegal for game animals in my state. However, there is a feral hog population here that is unregulated, so that would be a good way to test a spear out. Pretty exciting too, I've heard these hogs are pretty mean.  8) On the subject of spears, I've been interested in atlatls, they are designed to improve the leverage of your arm to throw long darts that are essentially spears.

BTW, how's the job been going? Good to see you around again.  ;D

That vid is gruesome but cool and kindda funny. Spear hunting is illegal for game where you live but im sure there is plentiful of varmint and pest too.
Atlatls are a little tricky, their flexible darts and throwing device are tricky to construct. But im sure you wont have a problem, you're so good at making weapons. As for me, i'd better start off with something easier to make so i wont have blundders. ::) Cant believe they brought down an elephant!

That's a pretty cool video, especially when you think of our ancestors bringing home the bacon that way. Man, I think I'd rather face the elephant than the hippo, that was one tough animal.

WOW that vid is insane...I guess you'd half to be pretty hungry to go after anything that big with just a spear...Ive made a couple atlatls there alot of fun and I bet pretty lethal if your allowed to hunt with it in your state

have you tried the atlatl's accuracy. Would you pick a Recurve bow over an atlatl ? Still pondering on what to use, need something effective. :-\

recurve is deff easier to learn how to use and it will be cheaper in the long run...those 6ft darts are exspensive to make and more exspensive to buy
