Much improved BBMG
« on: February 20, 2009, 01:00:04 PM »
I found some brass pipe fittings and built this 10" BBMG:
It shoots airsoft ammo. I couldn't imagine what it will do with a longer barrel  8) I had to drill and tap the coupler to 1/4" NPT to attach the QD. The barrel is a 6" 1/8" npt pipe nipple. It has a little blowby, but isnt too bad for now.
To get more air capacity, I attached my 7 gallon air tank to my 4 gallon compressor with a high pressure hose and barb fittings, making 11 gallons of air to feed my hungry little monsters. It has a slight leak at one of the fittings, but I can still do several bursts before the compressor kicks on!

Nice work! I love how you advertised on youtube would have never thought of that!

I picked up a 30" length of 5/16" brakeline to use as a barrel. It works much better but could probably be cut down a bit for maximum performance. The ammo to bore fit is much better with less blowby. I found some 1/4" steel slingshot ammo in a toolbox and gave that a whirl. Talk about awesome. I really need to get out and chronograph this thing to find out how much energy those put out. Buckshot might work well too. I also came across a 1/2" OD aluminum tube I've used for making barrels. I could shoot 3/8" slingshot ammo or muzzleloading ammo with that. It'll probably require higher pressure to get a good string of shots. I've made an adaptor that allows me to fill my CO2 cylinders to 300 psi from portable air compressors or a shock pump. I've also thought of building my own cylinders that are good for a 10 round burst. One can only imagine the possiblities...

Hummmm I to have thought of making my own cylinders to keep my gun going while keeping it relativly light. I would need a hand pump for filling them though. Hummmm

Here it is with a 17" barrel and waiting to be painted:
That longer barrel really rocks them out! I shoulda been a little more careful drilling the "ventilation" holes, but oh well the gun works like a dream. I'll try to get a video of it shooting airsoft as well as slingshot ammo sometime soon.

Well, I've got it painted:
I'm hoping that I can get some outdoor videos on Wednesday, weather permitting. This gun is just begging to jump through the hoops!

Well, I got outside yesterday and shot a video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idyvuS4vxOk
It demonstrates that the basic concept of a small cloud chamber and heavy ammo work together. The chamber is still a little larger than necessary. I need a to mount a laser for sighting, I wasted too much ammo in the sand. I wonder how it will perform at higher pressures. It spits airsoft at 20 psi surprising distances. My shock pump should arrive tomorrow, so I can test higher pressures out. I'll probably use an old 20 oz CO2 bottle for now and build my own custom cylinders later.

I used Krylon Fusion paint, it is supposed to bond to plastic and does a fairly good job outdoors. They have lots of colors so you can do your own camo patterns.
