I wish I had seen this post before going to bed. I woke up a little after midnight with a mouse squeaking on a glue trap. I took it outside and blew its head off with my gamo shadow. Oh well, I'll try again and get a mouse with a nail dart. lol Actually, my wife saw a big coon last night, but he ran off before she could kill him with the 10/22. She also saw a small possum, but didnt want to kill it. Unfortunately, I was at work, so I couldnt get one.  :(

All right, here is my first nail dart kill. Actually, I had to use a .22 as backup, possums are tough [insert your expletive of choice]s to kill. He was showing his teeth and I shot from about 10 feet. Unfortunately I was shaking and shot a bit low. The dart hit the real hard spot where the jaw connects to the skull and deflected down. Had it been a tad higher, I have no doubt the dart would have taken him out for good. 5 shots in the head with the .22  and he was down for good. I'd say he weighed around 20 lbs, give or take a couple. Here's the pictures, the first showing all the holes in his head, the other showing where the nail dart deflected downward.

Poor fella, I hated to put him down, but I am tired of him tearing up my trash. His fur sure was thick, I wonder if that means a cold weather. I've always wanted to catch a little one and keep it as a pet. As you can tell from the pictures, those teeth are enough to make me keep my distance from them when they are grown.

Congrats!

Now that you have taken your first blood with a dart, I am willing to bet that your next shot will be with less shaking.

first of all congrads on the kill. Were you using your latest homemade AG with the spring trigger. i was wondering could i use a slingshot band instead of a spring?
im planning to make a stocked AG. Im gonna use 3/4"(12"- 1 foot long)pvc pipe as the air chamber @100psi. and gonna fire 2'' nail darts.Barrel is (2 1/2feet). How fast and how much power will that giv me. i need an accurate gun to kill some starlings in my backyard, and also some pigeons and crows. Is my set up good enough to take these pesky birds?

Is my set up good enough to take these pesky birds?  Yes!  Definitely.

My 3/4" gun has a 13" chamber and it puts 3" darts through 5/8" plywood at 100 psi.

I did take the possum with my latest homemade airgun. The dart deflected down through the throat and he was bleeding like crazy and his eyes glazed over, but not quite dead. That's why I used my .22 to be sure he didnt suffer longer than necessary.
A slingshot band should work in place of a spring, just probably wont last as long. Like Stu said, 100 psi in a decent sized chamber like the one you describe should do more than fine on pigeons and crows.
