Plumbing check valve used as a poppet
« on: October 25, 2009, 12:28:24 PM »
I got a little time today at the hardware store and picked up a 3/4" brass check valve to use in a multishot per fill dart gun. My idea is to turn the valve backwards and use it as a inline poppet valve, similar to the airforce airguns. The o-ring pops out (the groove is too shallow) of it when fired, so I'll have to come up with a new valve stem to get this thing working. So far, it looks like I'll be using a modified rubber stopper or tapered faucet washer for the seal.  Here is the valve: http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=61252-34146-M31SL&lpage=none.
I'm wanting a quiet airgun that you dont have to pump between shots that my wife will be able to use to fill the crock pot.  ;D Darts made with a 3/16" wood shaft, a milk jug cone, and hacksaw blade broadhead should be pretty lethal and almost silent to use...

I bought a #4 rubber stopper and cut it down a bit. It holds air great, so now I just need to make a valve stem and hopefully have a working poppet valve.

Here it is, already working, now it just needs to be turned into a airgun:

This is another way to build a push button valve:

Yeah, but the valve I just demonstrated will be the primary valve, not a pilot valve. It will work in a vaguely similar fashion to the Airforce Talon or Condor: http://www.airforceairguns.com/index.html On the other hand, that is a nice homemade pilot.
This will allow me to get many shots without pumping inbetween. The airgun itself will have an onboard air tank made of 3/4" type L copper pipe. That will then connect via hose to one of my old CO2 cylinders that are out of date, which will increase my shot capacity. The valve is rated at 200 psi, I've taken it to 250 psi with no problems.
The ammo I plan to use will be darts and possibly neck it down to shoot 3/8" steel ball bearings or 0000 buckshot.
I'm not going to be able to get my other airgun done before deer season, so I've got another year to get that one finished. So I'm building this one in the meantime to give me a near silent one for around the home pest control. My wife also wants a airgun that she doesnt have to pump between shots, so this should fill the bill nicely.

It was the design, not the size that I was pointing out.

It can be scaled up in size.

doesnt your "poppet valve" work simmilar like the schrader bike valve just bigger?
If you're very intelligent its likely you're arrogant but if you're arrogant you don't necessarily need to be very intelligent.

Very similar to a big schrader valve, just with much better flow and lower cracking pressure. I'll take it apart sometime and post pics of the internals. It is easy to rebuild, and in a pinch, you could make a replacement seal out of leather, very similar to extremely old airguns.

@stu:
Quite true, would make a nice looking valve at that.
